You raise an important point, that there are no magic bullets.<BR/>This is part of why community-building is so important to solving environmental problems. As long as we keep walls between ourselves and the people with whom we share resources, "their" trade-offs will always be bad ideas, and "our" trade-offs will always be good ones. If instead with build relationships, we can actually work toward trade-offs that work for the community as a whole.<BR/>As for your early question about whether or not to use nuclear energy, my own opinion remains a resounding "Sometimes!" It's the devil we know and it's a tenible solution for a lot of needs for the next 50-100 years.
